Asbestos in Commercial Premises

02/03/2017

On 1 January 2012, new Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws replaced the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) laws in NSW. They saw the introduction of a new code of practice for the management and control of asbestos in the workplace.

Under this code, a “Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking’ (PCBU) with management or control of a workplace, must ensure that an Asbestos Register and Asbestos Management Plan are prepared, maintained, reviewed and kept at the workplace, to the extent required by the Work Health and Safety Regulations.

Since 31 December 2003, asbestos and all products containing asbestos have been banned Australia Wide but due to its strength, durability and resistance to fire and water, asbestos was used in a wide range of building products and materials up until the mid- 1980’s.

Products that may contain asbestos include vinyl floor tiles, cement roof sheeting and wall lining, lagging and jointing material and fire blankets.

About 60% of our landlords have attended to this matter with an inspection by a competent licensed contractor. If you have not had an inspection of your premises and it was constructed before 31 December 2003 we would strongly recommend you do so. Contact us to arrange a quote or organise an inspection.
